I recently came up with the coolest jaw structure for an alien species while drawing the other day. I originally started with a humanoid face, but then I thought about those... mandible things turians in Mass Effect have, so I added similar structures. Then, I realized those would completely remove the need for a cheek on the actual mouth, so I removed the skin inside, and raised the jaw and lip structure just a little to compensate. Then, I took an idea from another species I made and separated the jaw through the chin, removing the pallet and creating two wholly separate jaw parts that made a human mouth when closed all the way. But, there was the issue of the pallet, as that catches any food in the mouth and enables chewing. So, I added a secondary "tongue" that extends from the top of the neck and compensates as a pallet, and has the true tongue for tasting above it. The result: A humanlike face that still appears fairly inhuman, but familiar enough to not be overly creepy.
I'll post the anatomical sketches soon.
